Tiruvannamalai is one of the important pilgrimage town located in Tamil Nadu. The town is located in the foothills of Annamalai hill. The town has traditionally been associated with great yogis and siddhars. Ramana Maharshi and Swami Arunagiri Nathar are some of the important among them. The town of Tiruvannamalai is famous for the Annamalaiyar Temple, one of the great temples of Lord Shiva in Tamil Nadu.
The town of Tiruvannamalai is well connected with cities and towns of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh by road. The town is located on the junction of the Chittoor - Cuddalore state highway. It is situated 185 km from Chennai and 210 km from Bangalore (Karnataka).
Thiruvannamalai is one of the Pancha Bootha Sthalangal. It represents the fire element. The other Pancha Bootha Sthalangals are Chidambaram, Sri Kalahasti, Thiruvanaikoil and Kanchipuram each representing the sky, air, water and earth respectively. Four Brahmotsavams are celebrated every year in Tiruvannamalai. The most famous among them is the one that is celebrated during the Tamil month of Karthikai (November/December).
